About The Project
South Middle School is a new school for the Rapid City School District that was completed in 2024. The new facility incorporated the original school’s gymnasium as well as the newer community gymnasium to the south.
The school has classroom wings for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students as well as a new large commons room. The layout includes a full-size gym with locker rooms; modular and shop lab areas; art, choir, and band facilities; and a kitchen.
The facility is a combination one- and two-story building constructed with steel beam and column framing and concrete composite floors, utilizing exterior metal stud walls for typical classroom areas and concrete masonry block (CMU) for load-bearing walls at the gym.
